Third Edition. — Routledge, London & New York, 1999. — 274 p.
Hauser’s first volume deals with the beginnings of human settlement in paleolithic or 'Stone Age' times and progresses — breathlessly — up to the end of the Middle Ages. He includes discussion on the nature and place of art in the 'old' and 'new' Stone Ages, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Cretan, Greek and Roman times. The second half of the volume divides the notoriously homogenized Middle Ages into three distinct historical periods.
