По отцовской линии, потомок древнего аристократического рода, восходящего к XII в. Мать — Розалия-Мария Розенталь, еврейка. С 1889 жил в Париже, учился в Школе восточных языков. В 1914 пережил религиозное озарение.
Дебютировал "Поэмой упадка" (Le Poéme des Décadences) в 1899 г. Помимо стихотворных произведений, оставил драматические сочинения ("Мигель Маньяра" и др.), мистические трактаты-поэмы "Ars Magna" и "Les Arcanes", роман "Любовное посвящение". В романе автор проводит идею о стремлении к божественной любви посредством любви земной.
