German: Programmed Introduction is a workbook designed for use with a set of tape recordings. The script of all the recorded portions appears at the end of each unit as a quick reference and guide for teacher and student.
German: A Programmed Introduction, comprising this manual and a companion set of tape recordings, is designed to provide introductory learning materials for speakers of English The text and tapes present, in a programmed learning style, the structural features and vocabulary contained in the first six units of the FSI German Basic Course. In its use at the Foreign Service Institute, the Programmed Introduction serves to accelerate the progress of students who subsequently move to the Basic Course. While the Programmed Introduction may be used with good result in a self study program, it is more effective in our experience when it is used in a combination of self-instruction and display sessions with a teacher.
The object of the programmed format is to permit greater student language-learning participation in the crucial early stages than is normally possible in the usual classroom situation. It is in the elementary phase of language learning that contrasts and similarities between native and target languages make the strongest impression; hence concentrated and thorough learning of the target language patterns at the very beginning will enhance the student's ability to continue to learn and to communicate in the target language later. Since the programmed presentation is carefully controlled so that only correct utterances are permitted, the impressions formed here will provide a solid base for accelerated progress in the FSI German Basic Course or other following text and for a more rapid acquisition of conversational German than has been possible in the paste. It was observed in pre-publication trials at the Foreign Service Institute that students gained confidence from the Introduction that enabled them to participate effectively in free conversation as they proceeded into the Basic Course.
